Over the years almost all my artwork has been directed towards the creation of picture books and I have been fortunate that my work has been widely seen through this medium. However, I approach each piece as a composition with an internal narrative in its own right. When a series is finished, all the paintings are framed behind glass as a way of ‘signing off’ on them as individual works. The opportunity to have these paintings up on a wall is irresistible as it constitutes a method of display fundamentally different to that offered in a book. Quite apart from the scale and the way one’s eye perceives detail and texture in an original as opposed to a reproduction, it is the uncoupling of the art from the text that allows them to exist in another form.
